History of the Serbian Society of Ophthalmologists and Contactologists

The society was founded as the Contactology Society of Serbia and Montenegro on December 2, 2004, in Belgrade. The chairman of the Founding Assembly was Prim. Dr. Sima Marjanović.

– The association named European Contact Lens Society of Ophthalmologists is registered in Munich, which is also the headquarters of the ECLSO association.

– The Society’s goal is to promote the application of contact lenses, professional and scientific advancement in the field of contactology, and the connection and exchange of experiences among European contactologists.

The first ECLSO Congress was held in London in 1971 at the Royal College of Surgeons, chaired by Montague Ruben (UK) and organized by Alan Higgitt, Michael O’Riordan, and Michael Wilson.

– In 1982–83, two awards were established: the Fick/Kalt/Müller Medal, honoring the invention of contact lenses by three physicians (1886–87). Werner Claas designed the medal and first presented it in 1983. It is the Society’s highest recognition. The second award is The Kiewiet de Jonge Lectureship. In 2010, in Warsaw, the award was presented to Dr. Mihaly Vegh from Hungary.

The First COLS Assembly was held on April 22, 2005, in Belgrade, the Second Assembly on April 14, 2006, in Belgrade, and the Third Regular Assembly was held in April 2007 in Belgrade.

– The Society was officially admitted to ECLSO at the 36th ECLSO Congress held from October 6–8, 2006, in Dubrovnik.
